BENN'S BIZARRE WIN: WAS IT BRILLIANT OR BOGUS?
Conor Benn secured a unanimous decision against Regis Prograis, but the win was overshadowed by Prograis's claims of injury. While Benn showed improvements, the fight left questions about his readiness for elite, fully fit opposition.
Conor Benn, the 'Destroyer' himself, secured a unanimous decision victory over Regis Prograis in London, but let's be honest, it left a sour taste for many. The American, a former world champion, looked a shadow of his former self, claiming a hand injury hampered him from the off. Benn, sharp and aggressive as ever, did what he had to do. He pressed, he landed, he got the win on the cards. But was it a true test? That's the million-dollar question, isn't it? This wasn't the Prograis who tore through Josh Taylor, nor the one who’s faced the best at 140. He looked sluggish, his power muted, his movement compromised. Benn, credit where it’s due, capitalised. He showed improved footwork and some decent combinations, but the ferocity we’ve come to expect from a Benn fight, that proper tear-up, just wasn't there. It felt… incomplete. The British boxing public, myself included, wants to see Benn against a top-tier, fully fit opponent. We want to see if he’s truly ready to walk in his old man's footsteps, to carve out his own legacy at the very top. This performance, while a win, doesn't quite answer those burning questions. It's a stepping stone, sure, but the path ahead needs to be paved with tougher, unambiguous challenges. We need to see that chin tested, that heart pushed to the limit. Until then, the jury's still out on how far this Destroyer can truly go.
